San Francisco Symphony Tunes Into Tech for Virtual “Deck the Hall” Performance
Safe Site Check In Ensures Health and Safety of Musicians, Staff and Film Crew
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – December 2, 2020 – Using an ensemble of digital technology, the San Francisco Symphony ensures the show will go on during the pandemic. While the SF Symphony has cancelled all in person concerts through June 2021, they are offering virtual, cinematic performances and reaching an even wider audience.
The SF Symphony will kick off the holiday season with “Deck the Hall,” a family-friendly program of festive favorites. The concert program will broadcast on Saturday, December 5 at 3:30pm on NBC Bay Area;Sunday, December 6 at 11:30am on Telemundo 48; Saturday, December 19 at 3:30pm on NBC Bay Area; and will be available for on-demand streaming at sfsymphony.org.
Behind the scenes, the SF Symphony’s virtual performances would not have been possible without the use of the latest digital technology to ensure performer safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Technology in Harmony with Musicians and Staff
Specifically, the SF Symphony is using a mobile check in app from Safe Site Check In. The San Francisco-based startup provides an easy and secure way for musicians, staff and the film production crew to sign into the performance hall and participate in private health screenings while ensuring everybody is symptom-free of COVID-19.
“Our secure, touchless, digital health screening and check-in app allows the SF Symphony to manage performance hall capacity as required by local authorities. And if a positive test means they need to perform contact tracing, a report is available at the push of a button,” said David Ward, CEO, Safe Site Check In.
To film the performances, musicians and production crew gather in small groups. For example, wind musicians are socially distanced as they rehearse and are being filmed. The film crew uses the latest recording and editing tools to include collaborations with musicians in Berlin, Germany and New York City. They have also shot outdoor scenes of San Francisco to create a seamless, cinematic symphony performance. Additionally, the Symphony is using artificial intelligence to learn a composer’s style and score new music.
In the Symphony’s recent production “Throughline: San Francisco Symphony—From Hall to Home,” AI roboticist Carol Reiley, one of the SF Symphony’s eight Collaborative Partners, along with composer Nico Muhly, used artificial intelligence to co-compose a movement for Muhly’s Throughline.”
“The newest innovations in technology allow us to safely perform while collaborating with new musicians and experimenting with different art forms,” said Emma Logan, operations manager, the San Francisco Symphony. “Once we resume our in-person concerts, we’ll continue to use these technologies because they enable us to engage audiences in the performance hall and reach new ones throughout the world.”
